Livingstonia town was established in the year 1894. Livingstonia is basically a missionary settlement established by the missionaries of the Free Church of Scotland. Afterwards the Livingstonia mission of Malawi slowly developed into a small town. Dr Robert Laws was the leading missionary of this Livingstonia mission who worked for fifty two years. At that time when Dr Robert Laws was in power of this missionary he established a school for this region.

That particular school of Livingstonia town established by Dr Robert Laws was considered as the best school of that time. After completing studies from this school many Livingstonia graduates of that era became popular in many adjoining countries of Malawi.

Dr Laws was a highly ambitious person who wanted the Livingstonia School to become a University but after his death his successors failed to pursue the dream of Dr Laws.
Recently in the year 2003 the Livingstonia School has become the Livingstonia University with the help of the Livingstonia Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian.
