Dowa is located in the central region of Malawi. The city covers an area of about nine hundred and thirty square kilometers. Having a population
of about 411,387 this city is longitudinally located in 130 35 east and latitudinally 340 south. Dowa is also known as Chitembwe-mwera highlands and consists of small hills which are adorned with high ridges. The Dowa city is situated at an altitude of five thousand five hundred and seventy one feet with the Ntchisi peak. The highlands of Dowa are surrounded by rugged slopes on its three sides. It is a rectangular land consisting of several rolling hills.
The Chewa tribe forms the majority of the population. The Nyau dance forms a significant part of the culture of this tribe.
Primary education in Malawi is not mandatory, but the constitution necessitates that all people be allowed to get minimum five years of primary education.
