The Lakeshore

Lake Malawi of the Lakeshore region in Malawi occupies an area that covers around one-fifth of Malawi's total land area. Lake Malawi extends from Tanzania in the North to Mangochi in the south and is considered to be one of the most prominent rift valley lakes. The Lakeshore region in Malawi has a number of tourist attractions and therefore witnesses tourist inflow in large numbers.

The scenic beauty of the Lakeshore region has made it emerge as a much loved destination. The crystalline water with its beaches has become an important tourist spot where people can indulge in a number of water sports. There are also as many as 500 species of fish. Some of the tropical fishes found here are so rare that they are not found in any other location of the world. Safe sea conditions and clear visibility has led to the emergence of scuba diving as a popular activity. However, in certain parts of the lake visibility is to a great extent reduced during the rainy season.

The northern part of the Lakeshore region has Livingstonia Mission as its major tourist attraction. This spot has its location on the escarpment of the western Rift valley at an elevation of about 900 meters above the Lakeshore. The route up to this spot is strikingly beautiful due to its natural scenic beauty with bends.

Nkhata Bay is one of the very popular lakes of this region and is characterized by the presence of two bays. The Lakeshore region also includes other notable areas like Chintheche area, Nkhotakota, and Salima and Senga Bay area.
