The Malawi flag was officially adopted on 6th July, 1964. It was adopted on the day of the country's independence from the British rule. Previously the Republic of Malawi was a territory of Britain and was known as Nyasaland. The Malawi flag has been patterned in accordance with the banner of the Malawi Congress Party which was the leader of the Malawi struggle for independence.
From the top to the bottom of the national flag of Malawi you can find three equal sized horizontal stripes in three colors including black, red and green. The black colored stripe represents the people of Africa. The red colored stripe stands for the blood shed of people during their struggle for independence. Lastly the green colored stripe stands for the vegetation of the Republic of Malawi. Apart from these three stripes on the flag of Malawi you can see a rising sun. This rising sun is a symbol of the freedom as well as hope of African people.
