Madagascar Reef offers corals, marine life and a great treat to the tourists as the Madagascar marine diversity is something to be explored while touring Madagascar. Madagascar reefs are the second best in Madagascar attractions after the rainforests. The marine life is really exotic with various colorful underwater species. Madagascar reef forms an important area of research for environmentalists and biologists. Numerous research programs were carried out in between 1961-1972 on the reefs by the University of Madagascar.
Madagascar Reef is found basically in two regions namely the Tulear (South- West Madagascar) and Nosy Be (North-West Madagascar). The Tulear coral reefs lie parallel to the coasts spread over several hundred kilometers. In the extreme northern region the barrier gets separated from the shoreline and drowns below the sea surface.
The width and morphology of the lagoons in Madagascar varies and in some areas the lagoons are cut into low sedentary plains and thus fringing reefs are developed nearby the shores. The barrier reefs in the Tulear region experiences heavy swells of the remote austral regions.
The Nosy Be coral reefs are mostly of the fringing reef type and are much similar to volcanic islets scattered on the continental reefs. Nosy Be coral reef can be characterized by the coral cover on the reef flats. The eastern and the southern side of the island have well developed sedimentary deposits and often they have lush sea grass beds.
