Madagascar Elections are held on a national level. People elect the president, the head of the state and the legislature, to serve a five year term. The Prime Minister is appointed by the President. The Parliament holds two chambers. The 127 members of the national Assembly are elected in a single-member or two-member constituencies. Once elected through the Madagascar elections, they are supposed to serve a four years term.
60 people out of the 90 members of the Senate are elected for six years. The provincial electors elect 10 members for each province. Another 30 members are appointed. Being a multi-party system, Madagascar election is very important so that no single party can remain in power for a long time. They have to work in order to form a coalition government.
The recent Presidential election of Madagascar was held on 3rd December 2006. The election was effected by the political disturbance of this country. Opposition claimed that the manipulation of the media had a great effect on the election. Moreover eight of the presidential contenders supported the coup attempted by one of the army general.
Ravalomanana, who came to power in 2002, again won the Presidential election in spite of all the controversies. He has got 51% of all the votes, taking an unquestionable majority. The list of other candidates included Norbert Ratsirahonana, Herizo Razafimahaleo, Didier Ratsiraka, Roland Ratsiraka, Jean Lahiniriko and Elia Ravelomanantsoa. For filing a nomination in the election, a prospective President must be at least 40 years old and he or she must be a resident of Madagascar as well.
Madagascar Elections undergo complicated situations, but they remain fair at the end.
