The previous name of the focused public university system in Madagascar was the University of Madagascar. Institute for Advanced Studies was established in Antananarivo on 16th December in the year 1955. Very soon the Institute for Advanced Studies proved itself as the principal center for higher education in Madagascar. In the year 1961 Institute for Advanced Studies was renamed as the University of Madagascar. Toliara, Antisaranana, Toamasina, Mahajanga and Fianarantsoa are the places in which further five branches were opened. During 1988 all the branches of the University of Madagascar became autonomous as a result of which the name University of Madagascar was struck down.
The university system of Madagascar operates through many branches and they are University of Mahajanga, University of Toliary, University of Antananarivo, National Institute of Nuclear Sciences and Techniques, University of North Madagascar, University of Fianarantsoa and University of Toamasina.
The University of Antananarivo is situated in Antananarivo which is the capital of Madagascar. This university is Madagascar's chief public university. This university was set up on 16th December 1955 in Antananarivo as the Institute for Advanced Studies.
The University of Toamasina is situated in Toamasina city. This university is Madagascar's public university. Once this university was the part of the University of Madagascar. This university became autonomous in the year 1988 along with other public universities of Madagascar.
