Struga Poetry Evenings have become a part of the Macedonian culture and the enthusiasm of the Macedonians regarding this festival shows their inclination for literary works. The idea of holding the Struga Poetry evening was decided in the year 1961 in a place called Struga and was named after the place. The Struga Poetry Evening was started a year later. The evenings are held in honor of brither Dimitar and Konstantin Miladinov.
The 19th century poet, Dimitar Miladnov was the founder of modern Macedonian poetry. To honor him, each year, the Struga poetry evenings start with the recitation of the poem,' Longing for the South'. This poem was written by Miladnov during his education in Moscow.
Awards at the Struga Poetry Evenings
Originally, the award given out for the best poetry book written by the participating poets was the the Mdalinov award. Before 1966 the Struga poetry evenings were not so much of International in its set up. In the same year the 'Golden Wreath Award' was introduced. The award was given to living poets for their life time achievement. The recipient of the first award was W.H. Auden. Auden was a famous war poet, who had served as a soldier in the First World War.
