Balkan Festival is one of the many cultural festivals of Macedonia to have mushroomed up in the 60s. This festival as the name goes is all about Balkan music and dances in Macedonia. The culture of Macedonia has been essentially influenced by the Balkans. The Balkan festival is held each year from the third of July to the 8th of July. This festival has now been held for over thirty years. It is because of the cultural purpose that the festival serves that it has been recognized as members of the CIOFF and also the UNESCO.
The festival has encouraged the participation of Balkan people from other parts of Europe to participate in the competition. The criteria of participation in the Balkan festival of Macedonia is that the performance has to represent original Balkan folklore and folk dance. This has definitely helped the Balkan people hold on to their culture and contribute to the same. The Balkans in Macedonia as in the other states are a group of people, who rightly take pride in their culture. Many of the festivals of Macedonia are so programmed as to uphold the national culture. According to authentic reports, some 40,000 participants have participated in about 12,000 groups.
