Health insurance in Macedonia is coordinated through a public fund named Health Insurance Fund (HIF). The fund is governed by the Ministry of Health. Contributions to health insurance in Macedonia has been made mandatory so as to attract maximum investment in HIF.
The total contribution to HIF can be divided into three broad groups on the basis of the contributors. Out of the total contribution towards health insurance at Macedonia, 8.6% comes from the state budget for the unemployed and from the self employed, 14.69% from the pension fund for retired persons and 8.6% from employees.
Among all the health care products in Macedonia, health insurance tops the chart. The annual revenues of HIF are about $220-240 million which equals to around $110 per health insured person in Macedonia or around 6% of the European country's GDP.
