Social Democratic Union of Macedonia is one of the major political parties in Macedonia. In 1998, the League of Communist of Macedonia was succeeded by the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia. It happens to be a member of Socialist International. From the year 1992 to 1998 again from 2002 to 2006, Social Democratic Union of Macedonia was country's ruling party.
Till 2004, the leader of the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia was Branko Crvenkovski. While the party was acting as Macedonia's ruling party, Crvenkovski became the Prime Minister of the country. Later in 2004, he was elected as the President Macedonia. After Branko Crvenkovski, Vlado Buckovski was chosen as the new leader of the party.
Social Democratic Union has occupied important position in the politics of Macedonia. But in 2006, the party lost the general election. Later in November, Radmila Sekerinska took over as the leader of this political party after Buckovski resigned from the post. Under the new leadership, the party adopted several new policies that reflected new liberal views.
Social Democratic Union of Macedonia is also known as SDSM. The flag of Social Democratic Union of Macedonia has been described in the party statutes. The flag is blue in color and it has a rectangular shape with a dimension of 1:2. A yellow colored star with five points is painted in the left hand corner of the flag. A red colored rose is placed above it.
