The capital of Macedonia, Skopje, is the principal city of the Republic of Macedonia. Skopje, the capital of Macedonia is located on the upper course of the Vardar River and lies on the north-south Balkan route between the cities of Athens and Belgrade.
Skopje, the capital city was established as an Illyrian city and in the 4th century AD the city became a Roman post called Scupi. During the Middle Ages, Skopje was ruled by the Bulgarian powers. The present site of the city was inhabited since about 3500 BC as suggested by the Neolithic dug-outs. In 1392, Skopje was made a part of Ottoman Empire and the city witnessed a huge change of social and cultural values.
Skopje was even burned down in the late 1970's and was finally restored in 1873. Skopje was then captured by the Yugoslavian powers and then made a part of Yugoslavia in the year 1944. Thereafter it became the capital of Republic of Macedonia. The capital city witnessed a severe earthquake in the year 1963 and about 80% of the city was completely destroyed. With the help of international funds, the city of Skopje was finally restored to its current state.
Today Skopje has around 65,000 people and is the administrative center of Macedonia. Some of the popular attractions in the capital city include-Daut Pasha's Bath, The Aqueduct, Clock Tower, Feudal Tower, The Kale Fortress, The Stone Bridge, Mustafa Pasha' s Mosque, The Old Railway Station and the Kale Fortress.
