Among the monasteries in Macedonia, the monastery of Saint Panteleimon, Ohrid is an oldest one. This monastery of Macedonia was built in 12th century. Saint Panteleimon monastery has been set up in the Gorno Nerezi village. From Skopje it takes about 15 minutes to drive to this monastery. The monastery was founded in 1164.
Prince Alexios Komnenos took initiative to built the monastery of Saint Panteleimon. This monastery was built to honor Saint Panteleimon. The magnificent fresco paintings are of a rare style and unlike other Byzantine frescos. The monastery had to be renovated after its main dome had collapsed in 1555.
At the same time, the fresco paintings in the monastery were repainted. But some of the older paintings were also preserved. The fresco of The Communion of the Apostles have been painted by combining both older and new fresco paintings. The common themes for fresco paintings in Saint Panteleimon, Ohrid were 'Birth of Mother God', 'Transfiguration', 'The Entry into Jerusalem', ;Descent from the Cross' etc.
Among the paintings in the monastery of Saint Panteleimon, the fresco of The Lamentation of Christ is fascinating. This painting is considered to be a masterpiece by many art historians.
