The monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski is one of the popular monasteries in Macedonia. A church built in the same complex, was constructed to honor St. John Baptist. In Macedonia, the monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski has been founded near Gostivar- Debar Road.
A chronicle of 1833 has been found in the monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski. The monastery was set up by Archbishop Jovan in 1020, according to this chronicle. The monastery was ruined by Ottoman rulers in 16th century. But somehow, the church building remained.
Later, the monastery was rebuilt by Monk Ilarion in 1743. Archimandrite Arsenius, during 1812 to 1825, brought alterations in the monastery. Mitrofan and Trifilia were known to be popular priors of the monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski during 18th century. The name of Monk Lov is also associated with this monastery of Macedonia.
The Monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski has preserved a good number of manuscripts. Some of the precious collection of the manuscripts in the Monastery of St. Jovan Bigorski are the 1868 chronicle, 1863 ecclesiastic codices and the 1857 chronicle by Joan Harlosin. The monastery gets a mention by the fresco painters in the 17th century chronicle.
