Luxembourg elections take place within the framework of a constitutional monarchy form of government. The elections in Luxembourg take place whereby the political composition of the Grand Duchy’s representative institutions is determined.
Luxembourg elections take place on a regular basis. For the selection of representatives at the national, communal and European levels, separate elections take place. A person is entitled to vote in Luxembourg on the following parameters:
- He/she has to be a Luxembourgian citizen and have attained the age of 18 years.
- He should not have any criminal record.
- He must have all the political rights.
A person is eligible to stand for the election at Luxembourg if he/she is a citizen of Luxembourg and also is not a judge or member of the Council of State. Six members of Parliament represent Luxembourg before the European Parliament. They are elected through elections that take place in other European Union member states.
The three most important political parties of Luxembourg are the Christian Social People's Party, the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party and the Democratic Party. The last election of Luxembourg was held in 2004 whereby the Christian Social People's Party won 24 seats. Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party became the second largest party.
