Abilene is a city, which embodies the real spirit of the state of Texas and its history, hospitality, industry, family, heritage and even education. It is the county seat of Taylor County, Texas, USA. The city has beautifully transformed itself from a naïve cow-town to a cultural center and a college town, without detaching itself from its historical past. Here we find a unique combination of contemporary and traditional heritage and is one of the best cities to live in Texas. It is located near the center of Texas, just 150 miles west of Dallas-Fort Worth. It also houses the Dyess Air Force Base, which was originally known as the Abilene Air Force Base. The base is home to the 7th Bomb Wing, the premier operational B-1B Lancer unit in the US Air Force and a significant player in both, Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
Located in downtown Abilene, the Frontier Texas, a 14,000 square-foot facility, allows visitors to relive the Old West with the help of multimedia technology. Through virtual imagery, a visitor can have a range of experiences like the fear of an attack by wolves, the chaos of a buffalo stampede, the tension of a card game shootout and the chill of a prairie thunderstorm. One should travel to Abilene to visit the famous Grace Museum, which houses three museums in the historic Grace Hotel -The Art Museum, The History Museum and The Children's Museum. Built in 1909, it is now on the National Historic Register. The Buffalo Gap Historic Village in Abilene is a living history museum, which has over a dozen original buildings and numerous historical artifacts. The fully restored 1930s Paramount Theatre, features concerts and live theatre, touring shows, classic art house and special event films.
