Lithuania Architecture

Lithuania architecture mirror the long history of the land along with the changes in the architectural styles in different historical periods. From European influences to Gothic structures, Baroque styles, modern edifices, architecture in Lithuania represents each historical era that the country has journeyed through.

Beginning from the Middle ages till the 20th century, Lithuania is home to various architectural styles the traces of which are well-preserved in the country even today. The relics of 14th century structures are the oldest forms of Lithuania architecture which reflect the austere times of the middle ages. These include brick and walled castles. Strong influences of European architectural styles touched Lithuanian architecture during this era.

Then came the Gothic structures which dominated the architecture of Lithuania during the 15th century. Examples of this include the castles at Trakai and church of st. Anne at Vilnius. Architectural relics from the Renaissance age include Rulers' Palace of the lower Castle in Vilnius etc. 17th century witnessed the influence of Baroque style on Lithuania architecture. Masterpieces of Baroque architecture in the country are in plenty.

Throughout 18th century, the Baroque style flowered and gradually was replaced by Russian architectural touches during the Russian rule in 19th century. With 20th century came modern architecture. The architectural progress in Lithuania, thus, reflects the various styles and influences that the country borrowed from other nations.
