The academy confers degrees in veterinary field of study and also provides support in areas like welfare, food and animal health. It was first opened in Kaunas University under the Medicine faculty. The Lithuanian Veterinary Academy has suffered to large extent after the post war period. There was lack of text books, diminution in administrative staff and teachers led to the deterioration of the academy. After recovering in 1974, a new science division was incorporated in to the academy.
Presently, the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy has a total of 1561 students among which fifty students hold doctorate degrees. It boasts of being the only institution in Lithuania training technologists in animal husbandry and veterinary doctors.
