Lithuania land and people occupy a section of the region of north central Europe. Lithuania is bordered by the Baltic Sea in the west. The northern part of the country lies next to Latvia. It is bordered in the east and southeast by Belarus while the south western part of the country is located next to the Kaliningrad oblast. The southern part of Lithuania is bordered by Poland.
The Republic of Lithuania covers an area of approximately 65,300 square kilometers. Vilnius is the biggest city in the country as well as the country capital. It is also the hub of political, social and economic life. The population of Lithuania is a heterogeneous mix comprising of Polish, Belarusian, Russian, Latvian and Jewish minorities. Roman Catholicism is followed by a large section of the population.
The people of Lithuania speak Balts which is a Baltic language and has been designated as the official language of the state. Russian and Polish are also used by a section of the population.
