Lakes in Lithuania



Situated on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea, Lithuania is punctuated with several rivers and lakes. Almost all the Lithuania lakes are small. The country consists of more than 2800 lakes among which Druksai is the largest lake of Lithuania.
The Druksai Lake is about 44.8 square kilometers. The Lithuania lakes are mainly found in the eastern region of the country and in the Baltic highlands along the Poland border.

The lakes are unevenly spread throughout the country. A large number of lakes in Lithuania are mostly fed by groundwater and are connected by rivulets. This system of interconnection between the Lithuanian lakes draws countless number of tourists and the places have become tourist attractions, over time. The Aukstaitija National Park houses such lake systems and encourages kayaking among the tourists.



Lithuania has different types of glacial lakes namely, moraine dammed lake, kettle lakes and others. Floowing is the list of glacial lakes of the country:
  • Moraine dammed lake: Vistytis, Plateliai, Dysnai
  • Kettle lakes: Lake Druskonis
  • Residual lakes: Rekyva, Zuvintas, Amalvas
The non glacial lakes of Lithuania are the Oxbow lakes , Sinkhole lakes, Marine and Artificial lakes. The oxbow lakes are mainly found in the delta region of the Neman River and the Sinkhole in the Birzai district.
