Health Insurance in Lithuania



Health Insurance in Lithuania is mandatory for the travelers visiting Lithuania from abroad. Health Insurance in Lithuania dates back to the beginning of 20th century and and in October 28, 1928 the first patient fund was established in Kaunas. In the beginning accumulating the patient fund was difficult but it began to improve from 1935 onwards. The funds were used to establish the health care institution in the country and propagated healthy lifestyles of the individuals.

Post independence the Lithuanian government was looking for the effective measures for improve the health care system of the country. On October 31,1991 the health care policies are formulated and priorities in the fields were set to develop the primary health care in the country. Compulsory health insurance in Lithuania is applied by the State Patient Fund along with 5 local territorial patient fund.

The Lithuanian Health Insurance for the travelers visiting the country needs to produce these documents for compensation of health care services:
  • Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC)
  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
  • Certificate E109
  • Certificate E 106
The travelers visiting Lithuania with the family needs to bring either EHIC or the certificate E 109 or E 106. By the aid of health insurance in Lithuania the travelers can avail treatment by the general practitioner, specialist, dental treatment as can get hospital services also. It is therefore advised to the travelers to bring the health insurance before visiting this country.
