Health Insurance in Lithuania dates back to the beginning of 20th century and and in October 28, 1928 the first patient fund was established in Kaunas. Post independence the Lithuanian government was looking for the effective measures for improve the health care system of the country. On October 31,1991 the health care policies are formulated and priorities in the fields were set to develop the primary health care in the country. Compulsory health insurance in Lithuania is applied by the State Patient Fund along with 5 local territorial patient fund.
The Lithuanian Health Insurance for the travelers visiting the country needs to produce these documents for compensation of health care services:
- Provisional Replacement Certificate (PRC)
- European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
- Certificate E109
- Certificate E 106
The travelers visiting Lithuania with the family needs to bring either EHIC or the certificate E 109 or E 106.
