Elections in Lithuania



Lithuania elections are extremely significant and important in the country because of the democratic political set up. Elections form one of the most principal aspects of a democracy.
Elections in Lithuania include presidential elections, parliamentary elections and referendum. The electoral system in the country is responsible for all the various aspects related to Lithuania elections from organization to calculation of the votes and declaration of the results.

Presidential elections in Lithuania take place after every 5 years. The President is elected for a term of 5 years by popular vote. All adult citizens of the country possess the right to vote. Parliamentary elections in Lithuania are held to select 71 members of the parliament. These members are elected by direct and popular vote. They serve a period of four years. The election of 70 members are done through proportional representation and they also serve a term of four years.



Previous Presidential elections have been held in the years 2002, 2003 and 2004. Parliamentary elections were held in the years 2000 and 2004. The next election is to take place in October 2008.
