Lithuania topography is characterized by the presence of alternate series of highlands and lowlands. It is believed that the physical features of the land were greatly effected by the glaciers dating back to the last Ice Age.
The highest peak in Lithuania is situated at a height of 297 meters above the sea level. It is located in the eastern side of the territory. The plains of central and southwestern Lithuania lie between the uplands of Zemaiciai in the west and the eastern part of Lithuania. As many as 2,833 lakes dot the entire length and breadth of Lithuania. There is huge concentration of lakes in the eastern part of the country. River Nemunas is the longest river in the country and flows through the land covering almost 917 kilometers. The river has its source in Belarus. Other important rivers in the country include the Sesupe, the Neris and the Venta rivers. Though the rivers cover a large part of the territory of Lithuania, but navigation is possible only up till 600 kilometers. The northern and eastern parts of the country are covered by a number of marshes and swamps. Though a large number of them have been drained and rendered dry for agricultural purposes, several of them have managed to survive. The topography of Lithuania thus comprises of highlands, lowlands, plains, rivers, lakes, marshes and swamps.
