Though a number of games are professionally played in Lithuania, basketball is undoubtedly the most popular amongst the masses. Lithuania has been doing exceptionally well in the Eurobasket.
Eurobasket in Lithuania is organized for both men and women basketball teams. It occupies the third position in the 2007 Eurobasket ratings. The team finished third in the Eurobasket 2007 Championships which was won by Russia while Spain finished a close second. The difference between the winning team and Lithuania was that of 9 points. The Lithuania basketball team has won several European Championships. Eurobasket is the most prestigious basketball tournament in Europe. The tournament is organized after two years. The title of the Eurobasket Champions is a coveted one. Teams put up their best performances and the competition is fierce. Lithuania basketball took a giant step forward when it manged to win the title in 2003. However, it managed to only the fifth position in the 2005 competition held in Serbia and Montenegro. They fell short of, probably their best player, Sarunas Jasikevicius. There is Lithuania Euro Basket Championship for women too. In 2007 the Lithuanian women basketball team managed to reach the quarter finals of the European Championships. However, they lost the match to Russia.
