Lesotho Ethnic Groups

The Lesotho Ethnic Groups together constitute the total population of the country. A major portion of the Lesotho population comprises the Sotho community. The Sotho ethnic group forms 99.7% of the entire Lesotho population. Other ethnic groups in Lesotho form only 0.3% of the population and include mainly the Asians, Europeans, people from other continents and people of mixed descents.

Lesotho Ethnic Groups have enhanced the cultural diversity of the country to a great deal. Christianity is the main religion followed by 80% people of the country. However, there are some indigenous religions practiced by other ethnic groups in Lesotho. Sesotho is the dominant language that is spoken in the country. Other languages that are spoken in Lesotho are Zulu, Xhosa and English.

The Sothos form a majority of the country's population. This is one of the chief reasons why the dominant customs of the country are related to the Sotho group. The unity of the Sotho ethnic groups has helped maintain peace and avoid civil unrest in the country. The small European community inhabiting the land of Lesotho is composed of missionaries, expatriate teachers, technicians, aid workers and development advisers.

Originally the land was inhabited only by the Bosotho people, who resided in the regions of southern Africa. However, at the beginning of the 19th century, the heterogeneous clans with Sotho-Tswana origin, were gathered together by Moshoeshoe I, to form the nation of Lesotho.
