Lesotho Prime Minister



Bethuel Mosisili is the present Lesotho Prime Minister, who heads the government. Besides being the Prime Minister of Lesotho, he also holds other Cabinet portfolios. Bethuel Mosisili’s full name is Bethuel Pakalitha Mosisili. He was born on 14th March, 1945 in Waterfall situated in Qacha's Nek District. He has great interest in gardening, music, sports, reading and research.

Educational Qualification

Bethuel Pakalitha Mosisili began his primary education in Souru Primary/ Tebellong Primary School and later completed his 6th standard from Tsoelike Higher Primary School in 1960. He completed his schooling from Eagle's Peak High School and was awarded with the Junior Certificate and Cambridge Overseas School Certificate. He then pursued his BA and CCE from the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland and completed his MA from the University of Wisconsin, United States of America. He also earned the degrees of BA (Honors) and Master of Education from the University of South Africa and Simon Fraser University in Canada respectively.

Position of the Lesotho Prime Minister

The Prime Minister of Lesotho presently holds some other important posts including:
  • Leader of the Lesotho Congress for Democracy Party
  • Minister of Defense and National Security
  • Member of Parliament for Tsoelike Constituency No.71
Bethuel Mosisili started his political career during his student life and was an active member of the Basutoland Congress Party in 1967. Later in 1993, he became a Member of Parliament for Qacha's Nek Constituency. He also took charge of the Ministry of Education and Manpower Development. In 1995, Bethuel Mosisili became Deputy Prime Minister of the country. From 1995 to 1998, he served as Minister of Home Affairs and Local Government. He assumed the post of Prime Minister in May 1998 after the general elections.

Before becoming the Prime Minister of Lesotho, Bethuel Mosisili served as assistant teacher of the Masentle High School and deputy headmaster of Bereng High School. He also worked as an assistant lecturer of African Languages at the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland from 1973 to 1976. Bethuel Mosisili also remained senior lecturer of Educational Foundations and senior lecturer of African Languages at the University of Transkei and University of Zululand respectively. Even now he is associated with various educational institutions of the country. The organizations, with which the Prime Minister of Lesotho is associated, are:
  • African Languages Association of Southern Africa (ALASA)
  • Sesotho Academy
  • Lesotho Educational Research Association (LERA)
  • Lesiba
  • Southern African Pedagogical Society (SAPS)
