The present Lesotho King, Letsie III ascended the throne on the 12th of November under the King's new office, which was established on 6th November, 1990. He is the eldest son of the late King Moshoeshoe II. Queen Mamohato Bereng Seeiso is his mother. Letsie III was born on the 17th of July 1963, in a Scott hospital and given the name of Mohato Bereng. Later he was baptized as David in a Roman Catholic Church. The Lesotho King serves a largely ceremonial function in Lesotho Government and Politics.
The primary education of Letsie III began at the Iketsetseng Private School, which is situated in Maseru. He completed the initial part of his primary education between 1968 and 1972. He then completed the next half of his primary education from Gilling Castle, a Roman Catholic School in the United Kingdom. For further studies, Letsie III went to the Ampleforth College in 1979 and completed his secondary and high school education.
After completion of his high school education in 1980, the present king of Lesotho went to the National University of Lesotho to do his graduation in law. Letsie III also did a Diploma course in English Legal Studies from Britain's University of Bristol after getting the Bachelor of Arts degree in law. His Majesty King Letsie III also completed his Development Studies in 1989 from the University of Cambridge. Besides pursuing the Development Studies course, Letsie III also pursued Agricultural Economics from the Wye College affiliated to the University of London.
King Letsie resumed office on the 12th of November, 1990 and was named as Litsie III. However on 25th January 1995, he gave up his powers and King Moshoeshoe II was restored to the throne of the country. However Letsie III was restored to the throne after King Moshoeshoe II died on 15th January, 1996. He was crowned as the king in Maseru on 31st October, 1997.
King Letsie III also gives away the Prince Mohato Award to the individuals, organizations, clubs and groups for cultural, practical and adventurous activities targeted towards the youth.
The present Lesotho King takes great interest in agriculture and has an affinity towards arable farming. He enjoys country life and visiting his family cattle is one among his leisure activities. Rugby, squash, horse riding and tennis are his favorite sport activities. Apart from these, Letsie III also likes classical and traditional music.
