Mafeteng

Mafeteng is one of the important towns in Lesotho, which lies in close proximity to the Van Rooyenshek border. It is a busy town, where many shops and roadside stalls can be found. The word ‘mafeteng’ means ‘a place of passers-by’. The name is apt with the nature of the town. Mafeteng also has a historical significance. A fierce battle, namely Gun War, took place in this area in the 19th century. The war was between the early Basotho chiefs and the Cape Colony Forces.

Reaching Mafeteng is easy as there is an airport that receives chartered flights. However the town can be best explored on foot, as other modes of transportation are not readily available. The place is a popular tourist destination and the main attraction of this place is shopping. The shops sell variety of things ranging from handicrafts and souvenirs to food products like fruits, vegetables and other eatables. Like the capital city of Maseru, Mafeteng is also a stopover where travelers can collect supplies before heading for the mountains and highlands of Lesotho.

An interesting structure in the town of Mafeteng is the building of the Council Office. The front wall of this building is decorated with carved animal heads. Mafeteng in Lesotho represents a typical African town, which is yet to face modernization and urbanization. Tourists mainly come to Mafeteng to enjoy the natural beauty of the place. The two attractions of the place are the Bantu Stadium and the Diphiring Hill.
