Hlotse is one of the larger settlements in Lesotho. It lies in close proximity to the South African border zone and is one of the popular tourist destinations in Lesotho. The town derives its name from the local river, Hlotse. Hlotse in Lesotho was an important center of administration during the time of British colonial rule. The town of Hlotse was founded in 1876 by an Anglican missionary, Reverend John Widdicombe. Hlotse is also popularly known as Leribe because of an adjoining district town of the same name.
The colonial buildings in Hlotse evoke a nostalgic aura. The Leribe Craft Center, old military barrack and the District Administration Office are popular tourist sites in the city. The Craft Center is one of the best areas in Lesotho town, from where one can buy local handicraft items and woolen goods. Apart from these historical attractions, Hlotse has a bustling market and several shops conducting brisk trade.
Hlotse in Lesotho may be easily reached by roadways from almost all major cities of Lesotho. A road from Hlotse leads to Maluti Mountains and then to the shores of Katse Dam and the huge lake adjoining the dam. The road through the mountains offers beautiful scenic views on both sides of the road and makes the drive a really enjoyable one.
