Beirut is the capital city of Lebanon and its transport system is on a reconstruction mode post war. Looking forward to establishing a developed transportation infrastructure in the Beirut area, the program focused on the systematization of the prevalent transport system and also on building new ones. The project has the improvement of the transport system and making it economically efficient and functional as its primary targets. The program aims at constructing a grade separation component, rehabilitation of the public transport, a traffic management component and a parking component.
Public Transport in Beirut at present mainly operates primarily through three means mini buses, buses and taxis locally known as services. Practically all the routes and roads of Beirut are extensively covered by the various modes of public transportation. The buses ply across fixed routes and have fixed stoppages .The cabs and minibuses, however, do not such exact stops and can be availed by the passengers from anywhere.
Trips by buses and cabs are available at variable rates. A trip in a service or a taxi within the town may cost between 1000-2000 of Lebanese lira while a trip from one town to another may cost around 5000-8000 Lebanese liras. Traveling by a bus or a mini bus is a bit cost effective. A bus ride within a city may cost around 1000-2000 Lebanese Lira while one outside the city will cost 2000-3000 Lebanese Lira.
There are several service/car and bus stations in Beirut. Buses to Sidon and Tyre are available from the Cola Bus station while buses for Beqaa valley leave from Hazmieh. Passengers on their way to Tripoli can get the respective buses from Helou Bus Station.
