Romans

The Romans were a super power who held domination over half of the world in the medieval times. The Roman empire, covering a significant area of the world, was blessed with all-round prosperity and development. They were a truly powerful and respected world power, and dominated the world in their time. The Romans were a major power in Lebanon for a long period of time.

After the death of Alexander the Great and the gradual decline of the Greek rule on Lebanon, the Seleucids started ruling over Lebanon. Their rule was not smooth, and was fraught with revolt, misunderstandings and warfare. This turbulent period ended in the time around 64 B.C., when the Romans, dominant world powers during the times, decided to intervene. Pompey, the Roman general of the time, annexed Lebanon to the Roman empire.

The period of the Roman rule in Lebanon was full of prosperity and development in all spheres. Trade and commerce flourished, owing to the strategical position of Lebanon. The times of the Roman rule in Lebanon brought great change to the culture, habits, speech and overall mindset of the people of Lebanon.

The people of the cities of Byblos, Tyre an Sydon were granted the privilege of Roman citizenship. These cities became the mainstay of certain industries, aided by the Roman government, notable among which were purple dye, glass and pottery. The ports at these cities were also used as warehouses for housing material for import and export. The prosperity in trade and economy greatly enhanced the style of living, and massive construction and urban development took place in Lebanon.
