Greeks

The Greeks were a great race who have a history of world domination and consistent prosperity and development. The Greeks were one of the many civilizations who ruled over Lebanon for a long period of time, and their occupation of Lebanon left an imprint on the people of Lebanon and their culture.

During the times of the Persian rule in Lebanon, the Greek king Alexander the Great carried out an invasion of Asia Minor, around the time 333 B.C. Initially, the troops of Alexander the Great received no opposition with the Phoenician population at Lebanon accepting the greatness and might of the King Alexander the Great and his army.

The lack of resistance, though, vanished later, when Alexander the Great tried to offer a sacrifice to the resident god of Tyre. Seeing this as a sacrilege, the city revolted. In retaliation to this action, Alexander proceeded to carry out a siege of the city of Tyre. The bloody and violent siege lasted about 8 months, after which the city was finally conquered by Alexander the Great. The residents were then sold as slaves to other Greek empires.

The Greek rule in Lebanon was thus established, and continued for a long period of time, even after the premature death of Alexander the Great. The noble race of the Greeks thus left their mark on Lebanon. The people of Lebanon, the Phoenicians, easily accepted and merged Greek customs, words and culture into their own.
