The Byzantines were a great ancient race, which had a great history of domination and prosperity. For a long period of time after the Roman rule, Lebanon was under the command of the Byzantines race. The rule did not last very long, but nevertheless it is a significant chapter in the history of Lebanon.
The Byzantines rule in Lebanon took place immediately after the prosperous Roman period, during which Lebanon made great strides of development in many fields, including economy, trade and culture. After the decline of the Roman rule with the death of emperor Theodosius in 395 A.D., the country of Lebanon was roughly split into two portions, one still under Roman influence, and the under under the Byzantines rule, with its capital at the city of Constantinople.
During the Byzantines rule, there was all round prosperity and development in the fields of intellectual and economic activities. The Byzantines race was a very advanced race in these fields, and their experience had a positive effect on the people of Lebanon. The tale of prosperity would have been ideal and perfect, except for the religious turmoils and corruption that gripped the nation during this period. These factors hampered the progress of Lebanon. Added to these major problems, the city of Beirut was destroyed in the sixth century A.D. by a series of devastating earthquakes, thus bringing about a premature end of the Byzantines empire in Lebanon.
