Laos has a one party system. It elects a legislature nationally. 115 members are elected for National Assembly fro five years term. Since it is a single-party state only the Revolutionary People's Party of Laos is legally allowed to hold effective power. In the last Laos Elections this party won 113 sits.
The Electoral System in Laos the President is elected by the National assembly. He serves a five year term. The National Assembly members are elected by plurality vote in multi-member constituencies. They are supposed to serve a five year term as well. The number of sits increased for the 2006 election from 109 to 115.
In the 2002 election out of 5,800,000 populations 2,748,936 registered votes could be counted. Elections of Laos are always in favor of the communist party. But that does not assure that there is no corruption, rather the opposite is prevalent.
In the 2006 election 60% of the seats in the National Assembly came into the hand of the newcomers. Two are the member of Communist party. While 44 incumbents were re elected 71 new members got elected. Among them 29 delegates are women. 25 members of them were from previous legislature. Two independent candidates were also elected.
Communist party won 115 seats. A Communist party congress was followed. After that one-third of the party's political bureau was replaced. Choummaly Sayasone became the President after Khamtai Siphandone.
Elections in Laos is a much awaited scenario. The Communist party overthrew the six-century old monarchy. But Election did not bring democracy in its true sense to Laos.
