Laos Fauna has got the scope to expand due to the light population of the country. Most of the country is covered by tropical rain forest which is the home to several animals. Sambar, gaur, bateng, black bear, civet cat, small panda, douc langur, pig-tailed macaques, gibbon, pangolin are common in Laos.
Reptiles like royal cobra, green snake, black monitor lizard, malayan viper can also be found in this area.
Laos Fauna includes rare species like Irrawaddy dolphin or malayan bear. Unknown species like Quang Vu buffalo have been sighted recently. In fact species which were thought to have lost from the face of earth are also found here such as koupreys or Sumatra rhinoceros.
In the province of Attapeu, Champassak and Sayaburi some wild elephants are found in spite of the deforestation and the war along the Vietnamese border. Leopard, tiger and panther are becoming very rare among the
animals of Laos.
Fauna in Laos includes a large variety of birds that can be seen throughout the country. Birds are more common to the isolated places rather than the inhabited because of intensive hunting. However recently they are returning to areas close to the villages as the public authorities have restricted hunting.
Small crustaceans and sundry amphibians are present in Laos. Each river and water hole contains a large number of fish. The Mekong River is full of catfish.
Fauna of Laos is a primary attraction to the tourists as well.
