The museum was first inaugurated as a State Picture Art Gallery in Saint Nicholas Church. The museum building was established in the year 1974 as one of the projects that was being applied in order to improve the historical value of the capital city. The gallery of the Artist’s Union is also housed within the church.

The museum displays some 17,500 fascinating artworks of the Kyrgyz folk and applied arts and also emphasizes on Russian and Soviet arts. The collection includes drawings, paintings, sculptures and a wide variety of amazing traditional ornamental artworks.
