Kyrgyzstan Science and Technology is passing through a phase of transition, especially after its independence from the Soviet Union. The Government of Kyrgyz republic has taken up concrete measures for the progress and development of science and technology in Kyrgyzstan. Science and technology bears special importance to the social, economic and cultural development of Kyrgyzstan.
Science and Technology of Kyrgyzstan have two main objectives: firstly, research and development of the civil and public technology and secondly to maintain an efficient military technology.
For acceleration of scientific and technological development in Kyrgyzstan the President has set up the Coordination Committee. The main task of this committee is to monitor the different scientific activities, research and innovations in the state and inform the President of the same. Election of leaders from various scientific institutes of Kyrgyzstan is a significant step taken to improve the speed up the scientific and technological progress of the country.
Scientific and Technical universities have come up in Kyrgyzstan, to meet the growing requirements of engineers and scientists. The Jalal-Abad State University, The Kyrgyz Technical University are famous universities. Engineers graduating from the Jalal Abad University are in demand in all the developing countries for their expertise in hydro electric projects The Kyrgyz Technical University has various departments of engineering, food processing technology, telecommunications engineering and radio engineering. The government has also set up reputed medical institutes, which are famous all over the world. The Osh State Medical Institute is one such institute.
Kyrgyzstan economy is basically dependent on agriculture. Half of the labor force in Kyrgyzstan is engaged in agricultural activities or animal husbandry. Development agricultural science and technology has increased production. Vocational schools in rural areas work towards training the people in new technologies and improve the production. The National Academy of Sciences and the Kyrgyz Agrarian Academy have been set up to encourage agricultural research and innovation. Several institutes like the Institute of Cropping Systems, Institute of Forage and Pastures, Institute of Soil Science and Institute of Animal Husbandry are under these two academies.
The Kyrgyz Center of Science and Technology Development (KCSTD) participate in international research activities and new innovations. Special courses, symposiums and workshops are organized by KCSTD. Summer schools for retaining scientists are also common.
Kyrgyzstan science and technology though passing through a difficult phase of transition has shown remarkable progress.
