Kyrgyzstan President is the highest official and the state head of the Kyrgyzstan Republic. He represents the unity and the power of the state. According the constitution of Kyrgyzstan, the president also acts as a guarantor of same constitution as well as the citizens. The
president of Kyrgyzstan is elected by eligible citizens for a five-year term not more than twice.
Election of Kyrgyzstan President
The president of Kyrgyzstan is elected directly by the citizens of the country. The election is held every five years and the elected president stay in power for five years. Each president can hold the post for not more than two five-year term. There are certain qualifications required for a candidate to stand for the post.
- The candidate must be a citizen of Kyrgyzstan.
- He or she must be between 35 to 65 years old.
- The candidate must be living in the country for no less than 15 years.
- The candidate must be fluent in Kyrgyz, the national language.
- The candidate cannot be a member of the parliament and cannot participate in any of the activity of any political party of the country.
To be elected and declared as a president the candidate should get the majority of the votes cast by the citizens. The election is done on the foundation of universal suffrage and is done by secret ballot.
Askar Akayevich Akayev was the first president of Kyrgyzstan Republic and remained in the position until 2005 when Kurmanbek Bakiev became the newly elected Kyrgyzstan President.
