Kuwait history has a long past and evolved through the growth of many prominent civilizations. The history of Kuwait has also seen many struggles when the country was torn apart by disputes over its rich sources of oil. The Al Sabah dynasty that is ruling Kuwait even today, was set up around the 18th century and is a notable chapter in the pages of Kuwait history. It is said that Kuwait was one of the provinces of the Ottoman Empire and was controlled from the headquarters situated in Constantinople.

There was a time when the Sheik of Kuwait sought British protection. At that time the country was threatened by the Turks. The Kuwait Oil Company was successful in locating oil in their lands in 1938. However the onset of the Second World War discouraged its oils exportation. In the 1960s the Iraqis tried to gain control over Kuwait and once again asked the British for protection. In the year of 1963, Kuwait became one of the respected members of the UN. The Gulf War served to be a heavy blow to the country and it exists as a black spot in Kuwait history. The country won its much awaited independence on February 26, 1991 and the day has been marked as the most memorable day in Kuwait history.
