The
Abaiang Island of the
Republic of Kiribati is located in the west-central Pacific Ocean. Abaiang also known as Apiaia was formerly named Charlotte Island, Matthews or Six Isles. One of the
Coral Atoll of Kiribati, Abaiang comprises of 15 islets of which many are still inhabited. With a total land area of six square miles in the Northern Gilberts, the Abaiang Atoll a
Lagoon which provides sheltered anchorage. The conjunction point of the lagoon and the Pacific Ocean is located at the Bingham Channel at South West point of Abaiang Island. The
Bingham Channel is situated between the biggest Islands of Abaiang and the smallest Island of Abaiang called the Teirio.
The Island of Abaiang was discovered by a European called Captain Thomas Gilbert in the year 1788. And the biggest
