Shaba National Reserve

Shaba National Reserve was once apart of the huge Samburu Isiolo Game Reserve combining Samburu, Buffalo Springs and Shaba. Shaba National Reserve borrowed its name from a massive Volcanic Rock whose volcanic activity is still visible.

Attraction of Shaba National Reserve:

The river Ewaso Ngiro, which lies in the north of Shaba National Reserve, was once apart of the huge Samburu Isiolo Game Reserve. This river is beautified with tall palms on either side. Wildlife of Shaba is scattered in its woodlands and grasslands. Shaba covers an area of total 220sq. km. Shaba National Reserve fascinates people with its landscape which seems to be the creation of a painter. The rivers of the forest and the seventeen permanent springs give it unique appearance. Shaba's attraction however lies in its wild animals like gazelle, lions, cheetahs and leopards, reticulated giraffe, Somalia ostrich and Grevy’s zebra.

The climate of Shaba National Reserve is usually hot and dry and the rainfall per year is nearly 250 to 300 mm.

Transport Facilities of Shaba National Reserve:

The park can be accessed through the Tar road via Isiolo from Nairobi.

Accommodation in Shaba National Reserve:

Shaba offers an opportunity to live within the forest boundaries in Sarova Shaba Lodge and Shaba National Reserve.

Shaba was formed in 1974. It is mainly made up of low lying, semi arid plain and sandy soils. The presence of rich vegetation and the Shaba hill add to the formidable grandeur of Shaba National Reserve.
