The Lake Nakuru National Park was established in 1961. Lake Nakuru National Park is home to uncountable number of flamingo population amounting to more than one million.
Nakuru in Kiswahili means “water buck haven” which stands true with respect to the number of the greater and lesser flamingo population that is found in the Lake Nakuru National Park. Their food consists of algae. Lesser Flamingoes are distinguished by their deep crimson beak and the greater ones have pink beak with a black tip. Earlier the Flamingo population had started decreasing due to the change in alkaline concentration.
Wildlife of Lake Nakuru National Park:
Flamingo population has grabbed the greatest share among other animals in Lake Nakuru National Park. A newly created Black rhino sanctuary consists of the highest number of Rhinos in Kenya. Birds such as grebes, white winged black terns, stilts, avocets, ducks and migratory birds are quiet impressive. However, other animals like lion, leopard, buffalo, hippos, and red buck giraffe also command attention of the tourists.
The Lake Nakuru National Park is ideal for bird watching in the real sense of the term as the innumerable number of pink Flamingo population create a vast stretch on the lake, and makes an unusual and brilliant sight. Game viewing especially of the lions, leopards, rhino, buffaloes and Giraffes creates an alluring site for the visitor.
