Kenya Television

Kenya Television is one of the best media industries among those of the developing countries in Africa. Television in Kenya offers a diverse range of programs about a gamut of subjects that cater to the tastes of the middle-class public in general.

The Television of Kenya was completely controlled by the state from their acquiring Independence in 1963 till the 1990s. However things have changed in recent times with the introduction of a new range of channels that broadcast programs via satellite network. The language used is mostly English. Some channels also broadcast programs in the regional languages like Swahili.

The most important channels of Kenya Television are as follows:

  • Kenya Broadcasting Corporation(KBC)- The first television network of Kenya. It was completely state controlled.
  • Kenya Television Network-The first television network to break free from state control.
  • Metro TV-A channel under KBC to cater to young people.
  • Nation TV-Owned by Nation Media Group.
  • Citizen TV-Private channel.
  • Stella TV(STV)-Private channel.
  • Family TV-Christian.

The government of Kenya is not in control of the whole television broadcasting network now. But it keeps a strict watch over all that happens. Kenya Television has emerged as a role model for the media industries of other African countries.
