East African Standard,the oldest newspaper of Kenya,started of as a weekly named African Standard set up by Alibhai Mulla Jeevanjee in 1902. The newspaper went through different phases under various owners and finally established itself as a leading newspaper of Kenya,The Standard. Two British businessmen bought the newspaper in 1905 and changed its name to East African Standard. The newspaper became a daily in 1910 and its headquarters shifted from Mombasa to Nairobi. Lonrho Group took over in 1963 and renamed it The Standard in 1977. Eventually the former name was restored.
The year 1995 saw the East African Standard newspaper being taken over by Investors of Kenya and after so many changes the newspaper acquire the name The Standard. Presently the East African Standard is known as The Standard. But the popularity of the newspaper has remained the same.

Its circulation is only second to Daily Nation,the most prominent newspaper of Kenya. The Standard also has Tanzanian and Ugandan editions. Presently East African Standard belongs to the Standard Group which also owns the Kenya Television Network.
