The traditional music of Kenya is related to the history and culture of the country. The origin of the traditional forms of music can be traced to the music of the nomadic tribes who were the indigenous people of Kenya. Like other tribal communities of Africa the tribes of Kenya also had song and dance integrated into their culture and traditional. The rhythmic songs have over the time evolved as the traditional form of music of Kenya. The classical music of Kenya had also gained international fame and has influenced many compositions over the years.
Some of the names of the traditional music of Kenya are Akamba, Bajuni, Gusii, Chuka, Borana, Kikuyu, Luhya, Luo, Maasai, Mijikenda, Samburu, Tarrab and Turkana. Gospel music of Kenya can also be included in the classical music list of Kenya. The most important form of traditional music of Kenya is the Luo. The form of music is named after the name of the community. Luo music was sung for different purposes like ceremonies, bereavement, religious functions, pain, parties and even chasing away evil spirit. The Luo folk music is mostly accompanied by dances wearing colorful attires and exotic ornaments. The Benga form of Music which falls within the Luo folk music is considered as the precursor of the Kenyan pop.
Many traditional musicians of Kenya has gained international fame for their performance, Ayub Ogada who is an exceptional Nyatiti player became famous worldwide for introducing the sound of Nyatiti. Many people are of the opinion that the integration of the traditional music in the new wave of music is responsible for the loss of actual charm of Kenyan traditional music.
