Kenya History

Kenya history can be divided into different periods based on the development of human evolution. These are as follows:
  • Early history
The first inhabitants of Kenya were the protohumans. With the progress of human evolution, people from Ethiopian Highlands moved southwards to Kenya . Then came the Nilotic and the Bantu speakers. Trade with Arabs in middle ages resulted in Arabic dominance and the emergence of a new tribe called Swahili. The Portuguese substituted the Arabs. In the mid-19th century Kenya became a British colony.
  • Colonial history
The Berlin Conference of 1885 marked the beginning of British rule in Kenya history. It purposed bringing Kenya under the imperial system providing for an integrated administration, development of its economy and the welfare of the natives. European settlement on the fertile grounds of Kenya led to imposition of rules and restrictions on its people by the British. Consequently political groups were formed based on growing African resentment on their inferior status.
  • Struggle for Independence
Post world war 2 period in Kenya history witnessed the rise of political movements. Europe's determination to continue its control over Kenya and denial of African rights erupted in a bitter struggle for independence which ended in 1963 when Kenya became a republic with Jomo Kenyatta as its first president.
  • Post Independence
A clash between political parties occurred during !960s. In 1969 Kenya reverted to the One-party system. Modern times showcase Kenya as a democracy with growing economy and political stability.
