Malaria in Kenya

Malaria in Kenya is a very common. In the whole world ninety percent of Malaria cases take place in Africa. The main cases of death rate due to malaria in Kenya are among pregnant women and children below 5.

In Sub-Saharan Africa Malaria is the most common disease. Plasmodium falciparum is the prevailing disease. Among the four species of human malaria Plasmodium falciparum is very dangerous. Every year an estimation of 2.7 million deaths is caused due to Malaria and most of these deaths occur in Africa.

The resistance of Chloroquine which is an antimalarial drug is widely spread in Africa. In the highlands of Kenya the outbreak of Malaria is taking place. Some of the Malarial risk Areas are Central and South America, Hispaniola, Africa, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, etc.

In Kenya 20-25 percent deaths are caused due to Malaria .70 percent of the people of Kenya are at a risk of being infected by Malarial Disease.

In January 2002 Social Marketing of Insecticide Treated Bed Nets (ITN) program was begun by DFID. The budget of this program was £17.8 million. The goal of this program was to minimize the death rate of children below 5 and maternal mortality due to Malaria at Kenya.

When a malaria-infected mosquito bites anybody then that person suffers from Malaria. The symptoms of Malaria are fever, shaking chills, headache, muscle aches, etc. With the prescribed drugs one can be cured from Malaria.

Some of the precautions for avoiding Malaria are-

  • It is always preferable to sleep under a mosquito bed net.
  • DEET insect repellent should be used on the skin for preventing mosquito bites.
  • Insect spray should be used in the room while sleeping.
  • Long pants and long sleeved shirts should be worn for avoiding mosquito bites.

Malaria in Kenya till date has taken life of many people. Malaria is one of the major reasons for affecting Kenya Health.
