Kenya Parliament

The Parliament of Kenya, consisting of a single house is Kenya's central legislative authority, which can be in power for 5 years. The Kenya Parliament has a single chamber that is known as the National Assembly, where 210 members are elected and 12 of the members ( excluding Two ex-officials ) are nominated by the President.

Among the two ex-official the Speaker is elected by the National Assembly and the Attorney General is appointed by the President. A MP has to be Kenyan citizen above 18 years of age and must be a registered voter.

With the support of the majority in the Kenya Parliament the President and his Cabinet govern the state. It is the supreme law making body in Kenya. The Parliament of Kenya also controls the public finances.

The members of the Kenya Parliament are elected by the registered voters. After independence, elections to the National Assembly have been held on 6 Dec 1969, 4 Oct 1974, 8 Nov 1979, 27 Sept 1983, 21 April 1988 and 29 Dec 1992.

The Kenya Parliament remains in power for 5 years but it can be dissolved before. However in that case Presidental and Assembly elections have to be held within 90 days.
