The 35th IAAF World Cross Country Championships was held in Mombasa which is the coastal town of Kenya on 24th march 2007. Mombasa is the third African country which holds the annual event IAAF World Cross Country Championships. A cheerful elephant was the mascot of Mombasa World Cross-Country Championship.
Mombasa is the home of athletics. Kenya has made a world record in The IAAF World Cross Country Championships for winning it a number of times and getting many medals. A tradition of excellence has been maintained by the Kenyans in Kenya's IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
In the last 20 years the athletes of Kenya have won186 gold medals which were awarded in the events performed by Men, Women and Junior. 54% gold medals were won by Kenya in IAAF World Cross Country Championships. But in the recent years not a single medal has been won in the soil of Kenya.
In the year 1976 Kenya achieved championship in IAAF World Cross Country. In the year 1981 the runners of Kenya won their first bronze medal. In 1985 the first gold medal was won at the event of Junior Men. 3 silver medals were also won. John Ngugi and then Paul Terga are the two Kenyans who won the Senior Men's event 5times. Among the other women Isabella Ochichi, Edith Masai, Catherine Ndereba won medals in the women events.
