The
Kenya National Examination Council is the
national body which supervises and oversees all
national examinations in
Kenya. It conducts post-
primary, post-
secondary and other
examinations on a
national level.
The
Kenya National Examination Council was established under the
Kenya National Examination Council Act of the Laws of
Kenya in 1980. Previously, the
school, post-
school and other
examinations were conducted by the
East African Examinations Council and the
Ministry of Education. Due to a break-up in the
East African community, the
KNEC Act of Parliament was set up to take over the control of these
examinations, and to ensure the maintenance of their standards.
The
Kenya National Examination Council continually
tests and evaluates the
Kenyan curriculum to enhance and protect the standards of
education in accordance to global norms. It conducts the
examinations, evaluates the candidates, issues mark sheets and publishes the results. It also constantly re-evaluates the
curriculum and the
test system through research and processing of statistical data.
The
Kenya Certificate of Primary Education is issued to
students who have successfully completed the 8-year
primary education course in
Kenya. This is conducted and supervised by the
Kenya National Examination Council. It also conducts and supervises the
Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, for
students who complete the 4-year
secondary education course.
Other
examinations taken by the
Kenya National Examination Council are the
primary teacher education exams,
technical exams, English language proficiency exams, and
foreign exams. The b also conducts
exams for
business administration and
computer studies.
